Reading The Leaderboard: Wins, Losses, Pushes

reading the leaderboard: wins, losses, pushes

I open CAPTRACKER most mornings before I look at anything else, which is a habit left over from my projections days when I had to trust the numbers before I trusted my gut. The site auto-settles every pick against ESPN results, and once a pick is timestamped, nobody gets to edit it or delete it later. That's what makes a leaderboard report worth reading in the first place. But I still see bettors misread the most basic thing on it, the record itself.

A record like 27-17-7 doesn't mean a capper is 27-17 with some ties tacked on. Those seven pushes are picks where the line landed exactly on the number and nobody won or lost. Leave them out of your win rate math and you'll overstate how sharp someone looks.

the top verified sports handicappers this week, ranked

Here's how this week's names on the leaderboard stack up once you read the full record, not just the headline ROI.

why the push column matters more on a small sample

Break-even at standard -110 odds is 52.38%. That's the number every record on this leaderboard has to clear before units even start piling up. Now look at wezvidz, sitting at 27-22-2 over 51 picks this week for +22.4 units and a 3.4% ROI. Take the 2 pushes out and that's 27-22 on 49 real decisions, a 55% win rate.

It clears break-even, just not by much, and the ROI number already tells you that. The push count matters more when the sample is small: two pushes on 10 picks moves your read a lot further than two pushes on 120.

this week's hot streak vs the season-long number

CAPTRACKER's methodology page explains how units and ROI get calculated, and it's worth a read once. For now, here's the short version of why I keep saying small sample so much this week. Across the full tracked pool, 1,146 cappers have settled 6,913 picks, and only 605 of them, 53%, are net profitable.

Narrow that to the 77 cappers with 15 or more settled picks, the ones with enough of a track record to say something real, and 44 of 77, or 57%, are profitable. That's barely better than a coin flip once you demand a real sample size.

Season-long, X_Underscore_X still leads at 27-17-7 over 51 picks for +389.8 units and 51.6% ROI, and Timely-Conclusion532 is sitting on 83-38 over 121 picks for +61.4 units and 19.8% ROI. Those are the same two names from this week's snapshot. That overlap is the whole point. A single good week means less than a good week stacked on top of a good season.

Some of the busiest names in the pool aren't anywhere near the top. SportsBettingPicks has settled 640 picks this season and sits at basically dead even, +0.5 units. GuyBostonSports has made 564 picks and is down 61.2 units. CallingOurShot has 144 picks logged and is down 12.8 units.

None of that is a small sample. It's just a losing number, told through a lot of picks instead of a few. Volume proves someone shows up. It doesn't prove they're right.

how to use next week's leaderboard report without getting fooled

None of this means ignore the leaderboard. It means read the whole line before you follow anyone. Check the sample size, back out the pushes, and see if the name shows up in both the weekly window and the season numbers, not just one. If you want the vocabulary for all of this, CAPTRACKER's glossary covers terms like closing line value and implied probability in plain language.

When a few independent cappers land on the same side of a game, that convergence signal is worth more than any single record, hot or cold.

I'll be honest, my personal rule from my analyst days never changed: I trust a mediocre number over a hundred picks before I trust a great one over ten. CAPTRACKER's leaderboard is free to browse, ranked by units and ROI across more than 900 tracked profiles, and every pick is locked before it settles against real results. Check the daily feed tomorrow and see which names show up again. That repetition is the only thing a hot streak can't fake.
